Dust storms can occur anywhere there is loose soil, little to no vegetation and strong winds. This combination is mostly found in the world’s deserts. In the Sahara, for example, sand dunes dominate and strong winds occur often. Without vegetation to hold it in place, sand and dust lift easily in the wind.

Another region with severe sand or dust storms is Central and Southwest Asia. There, soil is sand or sandy loess (in this case, fine, wind-blown clay). The desert plateaus of Afghanistan are major dust sources for the region. The surface soil, endlessly blown around by unrelenting winds, has been ground into a fine dust. This dust lifts easily and remains suspended in the air for a long time. Sand also lifts in the strong winds, but its effect is largely limited to the first 3-6 meters (10-20 feet) above the ground and the worst effects are limited to the first meter (2-3 feet).

Dust storms occur in strong storms with well-defined cold fronts, particularly dry storms. These storms have strong winds that create the problems. Dust and sand lift ahead of cold fronts as winds increase in tightening gradient. Oddly, the finest particles are not the first to lift; small sand particles of the “favored” size are moved on the surface first in a process called saltation. Behind cold fronts, even more dust and sand lifts as winds tend to be stronger behind the front than ahead of it.

There must be more going on than straight-line winds. First, the ground must be dry. Besides surface winds strong enough to move particles, there must also be upward vertical motion. Upward vertical speed is roughly one fifth of the surface speed. The vertical speed determines how much particulate matter lifts. The larger the particles, the stronger the required wind.

Visibility forecasting is difficult; restrictions depend on many variables. On the edges of blowing dust visibility is around ½ – 5 km(1/2-3 miles). Beyond that, visibility quickly returns to 3-8 km (2-5 miles). Visibility will remain at 5-10 km (4-6 miles) in dust haze for days after a dust storm.

Intense dust storms reduce visibility to near zero in and near source regions with visibility improving away from the source. Dust settles when winds drop below the speed necessary to carry the particles, but some level of dust haze persists nearly constantly in the summer.

Small particles restrict visibility more than large particles. In general, however, the worst visibility occurs within 5-6 meters (20 feet) of the surface. Above that, particles settle out into layers (by particle size) of progressively better visibility conditions. The largest particles are closest to the ground and settle out first. Slant range visibility is typically worse than straight-line visibility, and distortions, halos and coronas may also occur.

Rain reduces visibility in several ways and is especially debilitating at night. It both directly affects perception (seeing through rain) but also produces visibility changes through its action on lights, the camera housing or lens and the observed scene itself. We normally see an object when light from a source, the sun, street lamps, etc, reflects from the object back to the eye. Rain interferes with this process in several ways:

Reduced contrast caused by scattering

The rain blocks light coming back from objects in the scene, obscuring the observed object. This effect increases with distance because of the increased number of water drops between the object and the camera.

Some of the light becomes “backscatter” – light reflected in all directions by rain. The backscatter acts as a veil and reduces contrast of everything in the field of view.

Reduced visibility in lowlight and artificial light

Rain makes light sources less effective by filtering away some of their light output and reducing illumination on the scene.

When light strikes the raindrops, only a portion passes through while the rest scatters. The rain therefore blocks some of the light reflected by objects and less reaches the camera lens.

Lastly, water reduces the reflectivity of most materials. Less illumination falling on the object is reflected back, so the objects appear darker and have lower contrast. For example people in dark clothes would become even darker and could be more difficult to see. This effect is even stronger for reflective paints in for instance painted lines on roads. Water acts like a lens which disperses the lights, so that that much of it is reflected in different directions. As a result, the lines become almost invisible to the viewer.

LYYN Hawk System is the
19” rack-mounted, real-time LYYN
solution for analog CCTV systems

Each video frame is optimized for contrast and color spectrum to make it as “natural” as possible to the human eye. Even the smallest fragments of color and object shape can be extracted from the camera sensor. And all this is done in real-time.

The result is an image that constantly self-adjusts to the environment, and you can focus on mission objectives.

One viewer – many cameras
By installing the LYYN Hawk System together with a video switch it is possible to add LYYN to the whole system. The operator can choose and switch any camera through the unit, providing lyynification™ wherever it is needed.

Cost efficient
Instead of installing more enhanced cameras you only need one LYYN Hawk System per simultaneous viewing channel. A simple system upgrade bringing a powerful result to the whole system.

<a href="http://www.lyyn.com/uploads/fog-cars.jpg" title="The autumn weather in the South of Sweden often means poor visibility because of all that fog and rain. LYYN Hawk System has three video synchronization modes. The video output can be synchronized to the video input, an external synchronization signal on a separate micro connector can be used or an Time Based Corrected signal can be obtained by controlling the delay.

LYYN Hawk System is controlled remotely. It can be easily integrated into operator consoles through three different control interfaces:

Last week, LYYN delivered the first LYYN Hawk Systems to the Ontario Police Force in Canada and the Öresund Bridge Company in Sweden. LYYN’s technique for real-time video image enhancement will be used for traffic control in both cases.

“LYYN’s technique will enable us to monitor the traffic on the Öresund Bridge whatever the weather and lighting conditions,” says Johan Nord, System Manager Technical Operations, of the Öresund Bridge. “We’ve tested the technique for some time – the results were very good and we’re delighted that LYYN has developed a product that is compatible with our monitoring systems.”

”The response of the market to our unique real-time image enhancement technique continues to be positive, and today we have 400 satisfied users throughout the world. We’re very pleased that the Öresund Bridge and the Ontario Police have agreed to be our reference clients, as this will facilitate our breakthrough in this new market segment,” says Bengt Sahlberg, LYYN’s CEO.
